Maryam Malakpour is currently working as a freelance stylist, consultant and is the creative director of Newbark, a shoe and leather accessory brand founded by Marjan and Maryam Malakpour in 2008. She started her career in fashion as the head buyer for a multi-brand boutique in Los Angeles named Roppongi after the famous fashion district in Tokyo. Roppongi was the pioneering small boutique in Los Angeles highlighting young designers at the time; John Galliano, John Richmond, Romeo Gigili, Sybilla and Dolce & Gabbanna's first collection.  The boutique was also responsible for the west coast launch of six Belgian designers, known today as Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Martin Margiela to name a few.  Maryam's innovative eye for fashion and discovering new brands marked a recognition of her distinguished style among her peers, clientele and followers. Maryam has maintained a diverse clientele in her styling career, working with legendary music artists--The Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, Marilyn Manson, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Strokes; and has collaborated with designers and photographers on projects such as The Row, 10 Times Rosie--a book with Rankin; Rhomas Wylde featuring Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Her advertising clients include Levi's, Mercedes Benz, La Perla, Nine West, Jorg Jensen, Revlon, Thomas Wylde, Costume National, and Louis Vuitton with Keith Richards. She currently styles all of Heidi Klum's projects, Halle Berry and Courteney Cox. Her film credits include Wonderland with Val Kilmer and Kate Bosworth, and Wassup rockers by Larry Clark.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is classic with a twist of rock ‘n’ roll, late 60’s, and early 70’s chic!

How do you stay on top of industry trends?
Lots of traveling, observing, and research! Sometimes, I stay away from the trends and follow what I like! All trends are not necessarily good for everyone.

What is it like working with Heidi?
Heidi has a great sense of what she likes and doesn't like, but at the same time is very open to experimenting with new things. We often have a great time coming up with looks and ideas for her TV shows, red carpet moments and photo shoots. She is a total chameleon and loves fashion.

What is the single most important tip in putting together a wardrobe?
Organize your closet, get rid of 20 to 30 percent of the old stuff that is not worth keeping, and make room for a fresh start. Buy classic, good quality clothing for the base of the wardrobe and accent that with current trends to give the look a modern edge.

What is the greatest challenge in styling?
Getting the best dress for your client before anyone else.

Describe an ideal client?
An ideal client is one that trusts your taste and lets you do what you’re supposed to do. bring the best style to them!

What is your ultimate career dream?
Besides styling, I am now consulting for fashion brands, and would like to continue to do more consulting and building brands—and have total creative control!
